Considering your topic and issue
1.) My
subject is obesity. It is a major issue because it affects our society and it
has copious amounts of risks associated with it. I will go into more detail
about the risks in my paper and how the risks are discussed across different
forms of media. The forms of media that
I will be focusing on are scientific journals, documentaries, and articles.
2.) I
have chosen this subject because I find it to be very relevant and concerning
at the same time. I have always seen it
as a major issue and I have watched documentaries on Netflix about food
industries and obesity. I am majoring in
health, nutrition, food, and exercise so I am very interested in the subject
obesity, and the health risks that are associated with it. There are many factors that play into obesity
that I am also interested in. I think it
is very fitting for this assignment because we all had to choose a current
issue that is discussed across several different types of media and I think
obesity fits all of those criteria.
3.) I
think the range of discourse can be both broad and narrow when it comes to the
issue of obesity. It can be narrow in
that there are people who think obesity isn’t a problem and then there are
people who agree that it is a current issue in our country and something needs
to be done about it. It can also be
narrow in that there are different kinds of obesity that professionals and
people focus on such as childhood obesity or obesity due to the cause of type
II diabetes etc. The range of discourse
can also be broad because one can talk about how other countries don’t struggle
with obesity like America does or how people in America refuse to listen to the
scientific evidence.
4.) The
sort of discourse that I would reference as part of my normal information
seeking habits to learn more about the issue I have selected is something that
is more factual and scientific rather than something that is opinion
based. With an issue such as obesity, it
is a major cause of health concern so I would go with a scientific journal or
some sort of published work as opposed to looking at a media source that is
biased or filled with opinions.
